Two of my favorite books relative to the Civil Rights Movement and African
American nationalism are In Struggle: SNCC and the Black Awakening of the
1960s (Clayborne Carson, 1981, Harvard UP) and The Autobiography of LeRoi
Jones/Amiri Baraka (1984, Freundlich Books). At the risk of being immodest
and appearing self-serving, I'll also refer you to my forthcoming book,
Pens of Fire: African American Nationalist Literature of the 1960s which
contrasts and tries to bring a unified perspective to cultural and
revolutionary nationalism. It's part of Garland Publishing's new series
on American history and popular culture and will be available initially
only through research libraries.

I'd like to hear more about how you envision bringing together these
varied threads--Star Trek, Vietnam, the Civil Rights Movement. The latter
two are, of course, frequently discussed together, but I've not seen the
combination of the first and third.
