A little-known fact about Diane Arbus is taht she was the sister of the poet
Howard Nemerov. Nemerov's poetry --which is superb but a little on the cool,
intellectual side--has always seemed to me something of a clue to her dark
photos. Nemerov taught at Washington Univ in St. Louis until recently (I
think he died, but hope I'm wrong). His collected poems won the National
Book Award in the early 90s. His poem Runes, a sequence of 15 15 line
stanzas, is a masterpiece. They must have been an intense family. I don't
know anything about their parents, but one wonders. . . .
