Dear Sixties People:

In response to someone's distrust of privileged white people who formed
protests, I believe that that distrust is generated from media hype which
presents college students as "bratty, trendy and self centered. " It's
important to remember that the college deferment was no longer in effect in
1968: naturally, students would protest to protect their own interests.

i entered college in 1969 and graduated in 1973 all under a student deferment. the first
lottery was held during my freshman year. if you had received a student deferrment, you
were allowed to hold it until your four years were up.

other deferrments had been dropped through the years, i.e., married, for teaching, etc. but i
don't know specifically which ones may have been dropped in 1968 although i know it
wasn't the student deferrment.
