I can understand the discussed reasons that people did not enjoy
the book from the class discussion. I will admit that I did not
have time yet to wade through the many messages that were posted
on the mailing list, so I could be repeating something that has
already been said. If so, I apologize. I don't know about
anyone else, but my response to the book was complete pleasure in
finally feeling like someone else appreciated all of the small
and humorous details of our lives. I mean, I read many passages
and thought, "Yes, I know EXACTLY how that is!" I too have
always been amazed and enthralled by the sparks that a cigarette
butt makes when thrown out of the window of the car in front of
me. I have also experienced those uncomfortable feelings when
seeing someone that I kind-of know. The avoidance scene on the
escalator and the scene when Howie doesn't want to offend the
maintenance man by putting his hand on the handrail of the
escalator are, in my opinion, inciteful remarks on the way people
deal with one another in our society. I dont' think that this
is as much about controlling our environment as the class
discussions have seemed to reveal. I think it is as much about
the everyday items and situations that shape our world but noone
seems inclined to discuss.
Thank you,
