I agree with those of us who found The Mezzanine to be entertaining. The
ideas in it certainly are not earth-shattering, but that doesn't mean they
aren't good or interesting ideas. Personally, I think that the fact that his
shoelaces broke just a few days after one another is interesting - or at
least intriguing. I enjoyed stopping and thinking about the little details of
life that Howie thinks about all the time. I found myself saying "that's
true" to much of what he said, and that's why the book and its footnotes were
not bothersome to me. It's true that a reasonably good book does not have to
be a great and inspired novel.
