I have to disagree with those who disliked the
movie. Admittedly, it was too long, but its depiction of
life in the near-future was brilliant and funny. It really
exposed our dependency on modern technology, especially
when the nuclear satellite exploded, rendering everyone
helpless, floating in emptiness like the airplane with
Claire and Sam (that was my favorite image.)
I also liked the subplot of the "end of the world."
I thought it was interesting that everyone was so ecstatic
upon hearing that the world had in fact not ended,
considering that it would not really affect their lives
(at least the native people) either way. I guess we all
take comfort in knowing that we are not alone in the world,
because, to take a theme from White Noise, the fear of
death is mitigated by association with a common group. In
this case, the group is humanity itself.
