faraday info

I think some people were actually kinda curious about the
problems experienced with faraday or the network in general. I
thought I would share some stuff, since it's pretty common
knowledge in ITC.

Faraday was down from around 3 to 12:30 yesterday. Hamp, the
system administrator, has tried using the fixes that IBM gave us,
making the problem worse rather than better. Faraday had to be
taken down from 6-12:30 to upgrade the system software to AIX
4.2, the same software on the new watt.

The fiber-optic cable that connects much of UVa to Gilmer Hall,
where the routers for dialing in and every building around Gilmer
was accidentally cut by construction crews in the old hospital,
leaving half of UVa isolated this morning from the network for
around 2 hours. Thus, while faraday has been up all morning, it
wasn't accessible because no network connections could be made to
Carruthers, where faraday is now kept.

Just thought people might be curious as to why they couldn't get
in to the mail....
