available following An Foras Feasa's recent success in PRTLI4 (the

Please note that the PhD fellowships are only available for students
not currently registered for a PhD degree (they are valued at around
Euro 16,000 per annum; AFF will also pay fees). The closing date for this

An Foras Feasa

An Foras Feasa: the Institute for Research in Irish Historical and
Cultural Traditions is a consortium of four partner institutions: NUI
Maynooth, St Patrick's College Drumcondra, Dundalk Institute of
Technology and Dublin City University. An Foras Feasa (AFF) supports
individual and collaborative research projects in the areas of
Humanities and Technology, and represents a unique contribution of
traditional knowledge and dynamic innovation. Under its 'Humanities,
Technology, Innovation' project, the following four project streams
constitute AFF's research priorities for the period 2007-2010:
--ICT Innovation and Digital Humanities: From Data to Metadata;
--Multiculturalism and Multilingualism: Textual Analysis and Linguistic
Change;
--Ireland and Europe: Creating an International Data Archive;
--Cultural Heritage, Social Capital and the Role of Interactive
Digital Media.
Following its success in the HEA's Programme for Research in Third-Level
Institutions, as part of the national research platform Humanities
Serving Irish Society, An Foras Feasa invites applications for a
Technical Officer based at NUI Maynooth.
Following two centuries of internationally renowned scholarly activity
on the Maynooth campus the National University of Ireland, Maynooth was
established under the 1997 Universities Act as an autonomous member of
the federal structure known as the National University of Ireland. With
approximately 5,500 fulltime students and another 3,000 registered as
part-time NUI Maynooth has 26 academic Departments which are organized
into three Faculties: Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy; Science and
Engineering, and Social Sciences. Building on a tradition of scholarship
and excellence in all aspects of its teaching and learning, and research
activities, within the liberal arts and sciences tradition NUI Maynooth
is committed to being a first class research-led centre of learning and
academic discovery. It is located on a pleasant university campus in
Ireland's only university town 20km west of Dublin, and has recently
undergone a major phase of expansion in research, teaching and service

Job Description: Technical Officer
----------------------------------------------
You will be expected to work as a member of the An Foras Feasa Technical
Team, reporting to the Associate Director of An Foras Feasa, NUI
Maynooth and supporting research projects across the member
institutions. This team of technical and research personnel provides and
investigates novel technical solutions, based on the requirements of the
Institute's members. You will be required to develop robust, highly
scalable and maintainable digital humanities solutions using leading
edge technologies. You will be expected to be involved in every aspect
of the engineering process including solution finding, implementation,
maintenance and dissemination.
Specific tasks would include:
--Architecture and design using OO principles based on industry best
practice and your own experience;
--Taking a lead role in the design and implementation of new
components and new functionality;
--Production of quality documentation including use cases, functional
and design specifications to support the development process;
--Design/development of automated test cases derived from those use
cases and the determination of quality metrics=20
using code coverage and profiling
tools.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
--Expert knowledge of Java with at least 2+ years industry experience;
--Strong Web Development experience using at least one web development
framework;
--Proven record of delivery of significant pieces of functionality on
previous projects;
--Proven architecture and design skills in a J2EE environment using OO
principals including UML and Design Patterns;
--Strong verbal and written communication skills with the capability
to work well (i) as a team player in a=20
cross-functional research team and (ii)
with individual researcher son problem solving;
--Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment;
--Solid experience with developing web applications in an open source
software environment.
ESSENTIAL:
--MSc/PhD in Computer Science or equivalent;
--Knowledge and experience of at least several of the following web
and related technologies: JSF, Structs, JSP,=20
Servlets, XML, Axis, AJAX, Spring,
XSLT, SOAP/WSDL, SQL, Javascript/HTML/CSS;
--Strong analytical and problem solving skills;
--Capability to plan and schedule own work accurately;
--Ability to work in a multi-skilled team environment and to communicate
effectively with peers;
--Ability to co-ordinate with other engineers and clients;
--Ability to cope with changing priorities and multiple assignments;
--Ability to present complex ideas in a clear and comprehensible manner;
--Ability to work on your own initiative.
DESIRABLE:
--Knowledge of some of the following: PHP, Perl, Python, Unix/OS X/ Linux;
--2+ years experience in software development.
Salary range: Euro 38,463 to Euro 46, 536 (5 Points) depending on relevant

the humanities or computer science whose proposed research topic relates

--Cultural Heritage, Social Capital in a Global Context.
Eligibility:
Applicants must not be previously registered for a doctoral programme.
Applicants must provide evidence of strong academic achievement, with a
first or upper second- class honours primary or masters degree (or
equivalent) from Ireland, the EU or from any overseas university.
An Foras Feasa (NUIM) Doctoral Programme:
Applications are welcome from candidates seeking to pursue a doctorate
in NUIM in one of the following disciplines: classics, Celtic studies,
computer science, history, literature, media studies, modern languages
(French, German. Irish, Portuguese, Spanish), music or philosophy. The
AFF doctoral programme will provide students with additional expertise
in digital humanities. Applicants should therefore have a demonstrated
interest in Humanities/ICT research.
Note: Doctoral fellowships are also available at St Patrick's College
Drumcondra and Dublin City University. For information, see
www.forasfeasa.ie. Applicants for An Foras Feasa fellowships may apply
to more than one institution. Each institution has a separate procedure
for application.
The first year of the doctoral programme will include three hours of
mandatory seminars weekly for AFF research students; later years of
study will include regular seminars, supporting the candidate's field of
study.
