         Subject: what is (digital) culture?

My question proceeds from a need to understand what I am currently and
officially doing, that is, teaching and professing "the digital
humanities", which would seem to me to be a form of "digital culture". If
digital culture is the right phrase, then I am thinking that it is a kind
of culture, and so I come to ask, What is culture? I would be very grateful
for pointers to essays & books that have taken up the question of what
culture is. Please assume I know nothing whatever about this, if you would,
and suggest what I might read in order to grasp current thinking about the
nature of culture. I would prefer writings that actually address the
question rather than simply use the term in a discussion of some variety of
it.
