There is a kind of parallel in Hofstede's work on intercultural
communication and what he calls the masculine/feminine dichotomy, whereby
some cultures favour direct forthright action and others a "softer"
approach. I don't like the terms, but the metaphor is being exploited in a
not unrelated way.
