    As far as I know course buyout of the sort described below is not
    permissable at Berkeley.

    Thanks for clarifying "course buyouts" -- it seems a remarkably odd
    practice. I must confess that in 35 years in the profession, in the Ivy
    League, the Big 10, a leading private university and a state one, I've
    never heard of it.
