For one thing, I found years ago that CAERE's THE TYPIST handscanner was
not good at all. Dont spend money on it.

Re the legality of using hand-held scanners. Remember that using a
scanner is similar to photocopying: EU law states that no more than 5%
(correct me someone if this is incorrect) of a text can be copied or more
than one chapter of a book, and then the text copied can only be used for
non-commercial purposes (e.g. your own research).
I know that some years ago in the University of Cambridge Library use of
hand-held scanners was prohibited, but this may have changed.
Why not browse the webpages of libraries you intend visiting and emailing
them to ask?

Do these scanners need a power source other than batteries: would you be
permitted to plug into the library's sockets?
