CENTRE FOR COMPUTING IN THE HUMANITIES
SENIOR LECTURESHIP IN HUMANITIES COMPUTING
Applications are invited for this Senior Lectureship which is available
with effect from 1st June 1996.
Applicants will be expected to have a substantial teaching background,
experience of research in a humanities discipline and the application of
computing techniques in humanities research, and familiarity with a wide
range of computing applications with specialist knowledge in one or more
of the following areas: text encoding and textual analysis, databases,
computational linguistics, hypermedia. The postholder will be a member of
the newly constituted Centre for Computing in the Humanities and duties
will include leadership of undergraduate programmes, teaching at
undergraduate and postgraduate level, personal research and involvement
in individual and project-based research in the School of Humanities.
Appointment will be made on the Senior Lecturer salary scale, currently
29,881 GB pounds per annum to 33,491 GB pounds per annum (inclusive of
2,134 GB pounds per annum London Allowance), depending upon qualifications
and experience.

University Research Studentship
Title: The Challenge to Generic Boundaries in Contemporary French Cultural
Studies

Most studies into the area of genre have hitherto been largely theoretical
in nature. It is proposed that this research project would explore ways of
exploiting the skills-based and transgeneric modules which form the
provision of French Cultural Studies in the School of Languages and European
Studies. There are ten such modules at undergraduate level and two at
postgraduate level.
The research undertaken will be related to genre (i.e. poetry, theatre,
written and visual forms of narrative, including cinema and certain forms of
mass-media) in French literature and culture of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Applicants should be prepared to pursue transgeneric research (in terms of
themes and codes which cross generic boundaries), taking as a case study two
traditionally distinct genres and examining the various ways in which the
notion of genre is developing and being challenged in the postmodern era.
French Cultural Studies is currently one of the major areas of research
strength in the School of Languages and European studies with six members of
staff involved in research and publication. This research project, which is
expected to lead to a PhD., will therefore build in a significant way on
this important research area.
Teaching hours (up to six per week, in consultation with the supervisors
and depending on the appropriateness of the various modules on offer) are
possible and the research student appointed will benefit from extensive
library and audio-visual and computing facilities in a supportive, friendly
and fast-developing research environment.
Prerequisites
The successful candidate must have a good Honours degree in French
and, if
shortlisted, be able to provide evidence of extended independent research of
high quality. Some grounding in current critical theory would be an advantage.
