Subject: "houses of reading"
George Steiner, in a non-expansive mood (does he ever have expansive
ones?), wrote of a day when there would be post-monasteries that he calls
"houses of reading", when, after the new technologies have triumphed,
small groups sit around doing what they used to do. I parody, but it's
because I haven't got the thing itself in front of me: can anyone supply
a reference to the full item in which this was published? Probably in
the *New Yorker* . . .
