JOB TITLE:Humanities Computing Coordinator
DEPARTMENT:Information Technology Services

DUTIES: Provide primary support for faculty, staff, and student users of
information technology in the departments and programs in the Humanities
which include: Asian Languages, Classical Studies, English, German
Studies, Philosophy, Romance Languages, Russian Language and Literature,
Art History, and the Freeman East Asian Studies Center, Writing Workshop,
International Studies Office, College of Letters, and Center for the
Humanities. Work closely with a faculty advisory committee in setting
priorities for work assignments and budget allocations. Also work with a
team of five regional Computing Coordinators to develop a shared academic
information technology environment that draws upon the general technical as
well as specific academic area expertise of each member.
Responsibilities include: adviusing individual clients in using desktop
computers for teaching and research (Macintosh and DOS/Windows); performing
network administrative duties in a largely Netware 4.x environment;
programming and debugging hardware and software; actively seeking
information on new software developments in academic computing; long-range
planning, which includes helping faculty develop courseware; supervising
student workers; and preparing and managing budgets.
MINIMUM DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree required; advanced
degree preferred. Significant familiarity with liberal arts education
required; a variety of educational, professional, and academic
experiences suitable. Strong initiative and proactive work style critical.
Foreign language skills desirable. Excellent communication,
time-management, and problem-solving skills required. Must be able to
understand the individual computer needs of faculty in connection with
teaching and scholarship.
Computer requirements: (1) a detailed understanding of both Macintosh and
DOS/Windows operating systems; (2) familiarity with Local Area Networks
(Netware 4.x preferred); (3) experience with word processing, hypertext,
multimedia, database, and spreadsheet applications. Software currently
used includes FrenchCheck, Past Masters, Turing's World, Tarski's World,
AldusFetch, Quicktime, Hypercard, Perseus 2.0, and ImageBase, as well as
Internet browsers.
