MARINE RESOURCES AND HUMAN SOCIETIES
IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC SINCE 1500

The Maritime Studies Research Unit (MSRU) at Memorial University
of Newfoundland will sponsor a conference on October 20-22, 1995
on "Marine Resources and Human Societies in the North Atlantic
Since 1500. Sessions will cover the historical origins of the
present crisis in the fisheries by examining: marine resources in
historical perspective; estimating fishing effort in the past;
property rights and their ecological consequences; traditional
ecological knowledge; fisheries and government management,
maritime communities in history; and marine ecology and underde-
