Subject: Musaios Upgrade CD-ROM Access

This will be of general interest to Windows users. MUSAIOS is the
updated form of the earlier PHAROS and SEARCHER programs. Please pardon
the duplication caused by cross-posting.

> Announcing Version 1.0c for Windows
>
> We are pleased to announce the release of Version 1.0c of Musaios for TLG
> CD-ROM #D and PHI CD-ROM's #5.3 and #6. This version contains a number of
> new search features and has corrected a number of bugs, particularly in the
> display of papyri and inscriptions.
>
>
> DESCRIPTION
>
> The search engine has been revised to provide full Boolean searches with two
> terms (more terms will be added in a future version). Musaios 1.0c has four
> Boolean operators: OR, AND, AND THEN, and AND NOT. The context (or
> "nearness") for a Boolean search can be defined, and search modes (EXACT,
> ANY, PREFIX, and SUFFIX) can be applied to individual terms as well as to
> the entire search. In addition, character sets (as in Unix grep) and single
> character wildcards are supported. A new section in the manual
> (musaios.wri) entitled ADVANCED SEARCHING details these options and how to
> use them.
>
> In addition to these enhancements a number of small problems with displaying
> texts have been fixed. More medial vs. terminal sigmas are handled
> correctly, the Roman 'h' in Attic inscriptions is now displayed correctly,
> and a few more of the papyrus and inscriptional symbols which do not require
> a separate font now display correctly.
>
> Finally, Musaios 1.0c has received some limited testing on Windows NT 3.5
> and Chicago Beta 1, and appears to function correctly in both environments.
> There are many features in 32-bit Windows (NT or Chicago) which we could use
> to enhance Musaios, and would be interested in knowing what you think about
> Musaios moving to a 32-bit environment, and whether or not support for the
> older 16-bit Windows 3.x should be retained.
>
> One item which has remained the same, despite many requests for a change, is
> the amount of text which can be exported via the Windows Clipboard. As many
> of you have been told when you inquired, this is a legal rather than a
> technical issue. Due to copyright considerations all developers of this
> type of software have been asked to limit the amount of text their software
> can export at one time. We regret this limitation but have no wish to cause
> legal problems for the creators of these CD-ROM's. We hope to clarify this
> issue in the future and provide the maximum export legally allowable.

> AVAILABILITY
>
> Musaios 1.0c is available electronically via FTP and will work with the same
> registration number as previous versions. The current musaios.exe is dated
> 8/21/94 and has a file size of 265600.
>
> To obtain the upgrade (176K), which contains the new files alone, obtain the
> file "upgrd10c.exe" from /pub/vendor/musaios at ftp.cerf.net (be sure to use
> the "binary" mode throughout the transfer process). After ensuring that you
> have a backup copy of your current Musaios version in case something goes
> wrong, execute this file in a temp directory (e.g. c:\temp) then copy the
> new files which are extracted into your current Musaios directory. If you
> want to upgrade down to the smallest detail, change the icons in Program
> Manager to read "Musaios 1.0c" rather than "1.0b".
>
> If you prefer to pull a complete copy (428K), with full setup program,
> obtain the file "mus10c.exe" from /pub/vendor/musaios at ftp.cerf.net (be
> sure to use the "binary" mode throughout the transfer process). After
> ensuring that you have a backup copy of your current Musaios version in case
> something goes wrong, execute this file in a temp directory (e.g. c:\temp)
> to extract a complete set of installation files. Execute "setup.exe" to
> install the new version of the program.
>
> If you have problems with the upgrade, please contact Randy Smith at
