If you are working with texts in verse, I would recommend
Francisco Marcos-Marin's UNITE program, which collates up to
six versions of a given poetic text and produces a "unified"
version, along with an apparatus. Parameters are user-definable.
For more information contact marcos directly, at either of the
following addresses:

The modem will need an AC adpator for 220 volts rather than the US adaptor
for 110 volts. The adaptor plug for connecting to the Italian phone lines is
available in most department stores and all specialty electronic shops in
larger cities in Italy.
Because of the high cost of overseas connections when dialing from Europe to
the US, it is infinitely better and cheaper to establish contact with an
Italian university and use the internet connection.
Starting at 2400 BAUD and going up to higher speeds, US modems should be
compatible with European modems. (Most of them are made in the Far East
anyway.)

I have not been to Italy, but I have traveled to other countries and
finding a little gadget that converts an american jack to the local
hardware is very easy to find in most local electronic stores in the
country to which you are going. I use to be in touch with an Italian.
Haven't tried his e-mail address lately, but you can try him and ask
