In response to Marc Bizer's request, the quotation in question is from Ovid,
*Tristia* III.4a, l. 25 (in slightly different form). Lines 25-26 are:
crede mihi, bene qui latuit bene vixit, et intra
fortunam debet quisque manere suam.
But in the form Bizer cites (bene vixit bene qui latuit), the quote is more
familiar to me as the motto Descartes adopted for himself.
