I should like to pass on to subscribers to Humanist interested
in Near and Middle Eastern studies some postings which have appeared
recently on Egypt-net, and which relate to new Arabic fonts for TeX.

An extension to LaTeX is available which will allow the user to
typeset simple Arabic documents. These can then be printed on a laser
printer, or viewed using whatever dvi previewer you are used to.
The package can be retrieved by anonymous ftp, as follows:
unix> ftp icsi-ftp.berkeley.edu
name: anonymous
Password: <your name>
ftp> binary
ftp> cd pub/ai/atex
ftp> get atex.tar.Z
ftp> quit
The tar file includes font files for Arabic. If you also want the
MetaFont source for this font, it is available in YarbFont.Z in the same
directory.

A few minor changes have been made to the "atex" package I
recently made available, for typesetting in Arabic. It was pointed
out to me that I didn't consistently distinguish between isolated hamza
and hamza-on-a-cup; this has been fixed, so that the hamza-on-a-cup
character is "'", as it was before, and the isolated hamza character
is "|". I've also changed things so that the letter `ain is produced
by the input character "o", which is a little easier to reach on most
keyboards.
To get the update: (note that icsi-ftp.berkeley.edu is also
called icsic.berkeley.edu; you may have to use that name)
unix> ftp icsi-ftp.berkeley.edu
name: anonymous
Password: <your name>
ftp> binary
ftp> cd pub/ai/atex
ftp> get new_connect.tar.Z
ftp> quit
new_connect.tar.Z is a compressed tar file containing the updated
versions of arabic_connect.c and arabic_keys.c. Let these replace your
original versions of these files, then "make arabic_connect", and that
should do it.

Prof. Klaus Lagally, who is at the Institut f"ur Informatik of the
Universit"at Stuttgart, announces his TeX addendum ArabTeX, which
is a PD macro package adapted to the specific needs of typesetting
Arabic. The distribution version will include the Metafont sources
for the Arabic letters (plus Parsi). The package is intended to be
compatible with LaTeX (a subject still under testing). It will be
made available in the fairly near future on the Institute's server
ifi.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de

accessible to the Arab world (and hence better suited to ArabTeX's
