ASSOCIATION FOR COMPUTERS AND THE HUMANITIES

Third Biennial Conference

Teaching Humanists Computers

June 23-25,1990

Fordham University

Rose Hill Campus

Bronx, New York 10458

The conference will take place over a June weekend,
beginning Saturday after lunch and extending through Monday
morning. The talks and sessions will focus on the problems of

materail and techniques are interdisciplinary there will be
papers dealing with specific areas in the humanities -- Music,
Art, Literature, Linguistics, Philosophy, and others. Panel
discussions on specific issues of interest to humanists are
being organized. At the banquet on Sunday evening, the keynote
speaker will be Susan Hockey of Oxford University.

The registration fee includes attendance at all meetings,
wine and cheese, coffee breaks, five meals (Saturday lunch through
Monday breakfast) as well as the banquet on Sunday evening.
Before May 15th the registration fee is $80.00; after that date

LIBERAL ARTS MULTIMEDIA EXPLORATION PROJECT
04/13/90

Mills College, Reed College, and the Advanced Technology Planning Group
at the University of California at Berkeley are pleased to sponsor the
Liberal Arts Multimedia Exploration Project. The target audience for
this program is liberal arts faculty in the fine arts and the humanities
with access to NeXT workstations who have an interest in instructional
computing. Participants will be provided with an opportunity to explore
project ideas pertinent to their disciplines with other faculty, to gain
hands-on experience with a powerful multimedia authoring environment on
the NeXT workstation, and to reflect upon the value of this experience
in their approach to teaching and student learning. The expected
outcome for each participant is the development of one or more modules
for use in some part of a course rather than a large scale effort
requiring total course revision and formal classroom testing and
evaluation.

The project provides a one week summer workshop experience with other
faculty, followed by a one year period of electronic dialog, sharing
ideas, techniques, and examples. In return, some commitment on the part
of each participant's college or university is expected, particularly in
providing travel funds and in providing access to NeXT computing
resources at each participant's home institution similar to those used
in the summer workshop.

The project seeks first-time faculty-developers as well as faculty with
prior experience in developing computer-based materials. The project
will familiarize participants with multimedia design issues and tools,
primarily through the use of a new NeXT multimedia authoring environment
called MediaStation. MediaStation provides tools for creating and
searching through large multimedia archives without having to master
traditional programming skills. It provides tools for creating digital
image libraries, digital audio libraries, and text libraries that can
then be browsed or structured into multi-media learning experiences.
For those interested in the field of electronic music, a variety of
other tools centered on the NeXT DSP and MIDI interfaces will be
provided.
