I'm grateful for the responses to my message. Those on umlaut
manifest what I assumed anyway; that there is no agreed standard.
Here at Cambridge we follow the character by vertical bar (|);
and encode other accents comparably (eg < = acute; > = grave;
~ = cedilla or tilde as appropriate).

Would it be worth having a standard at least for communications to
HUMANIST?
